Architecture for 5th graders

Our own Ms. Baugh's mother was kind enough to share her talent with our 5th graders today.   Mrs. Harrison Baugh taught a lesson on structure and design through images of interesting structures from all over the world.  Through Gaudi in Italy, her own designs in Maryland, and even some local buildings right here in Old Town we learned about art in architecture.  Students then had a chance to build structures using marshmallows and toothpicks.  Look at the fantastic results!!

Fun project, you could do this one at home!

The 6th graders and I got rained out of a day working on our boat installation sculpture a while back.  We decided to try out a faux batik method.  Using elmers glue, draw a design on fabric.  Let it dry.  Using acrylic paint, paint over the entire design with bright colors.  Let it dry.  Soak the piece in water and then slosh it around a bit to remove all the glue (and whatever paint was on the glue).  Here are some successful results:

Ms. Dasilva really promotes art in her classroom.  Look at these fantastic artworks!  They remind me a bit of Piet Mondrian's work.

Kindergarten

Kindergartners have been learning about symmetry.  They learned that when both sides of something are the same, it's symmetrical.  Take a look at some of their symmetrical butterflys.

6th grade Exploratory II

The 6th grade Exploratory II group created a fantastic installation sculpture based on the work of George Segal.  Their sculpture is currently displayed in front of the Specialist's Hall down toward Coach Giusti's room.  They worked as a team from start to finish on steps such as writing a proposal to Ms. Jannes, cleaning and painting the boat (multiple coats), creating armatures for their sculptures, plastering the sculptures, varnishing the sculptures, and silicone caulking them to the boat.

Industrial Design

Did you know that industrial designers create all kinds of things?  Furniture, cars, shoes, portable speakers...and the list goes on and on.  Two wonderful guest speakers came to Sigsbee today to teach us about industrial design, Julia Baugh and Tony Smith.  Julia designs for Bambeco.    Julia and Tony taught our 5th graders all about industrial design and gave them their first lesson on creating a transportation design.  The 5th graders sketched out some of their fabulous ideas.  Take a look...

Enrichment II

In my Enrichment II class, we studied Louise Nevelson for inspiration and came up with this fantastic sculpture:

And The Chicken Man of South Carolina for these paintings:

Back tracking...

So I'm going to back track a bit to provide you with a basic understanding of my curriculum format.  Utilizing the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website and floor plan (MET Map), students will be guided through a variety of visual art categories.  We started in the American Wing, have also explored the Egyptian Wing, and are now moving into The Great Hall.  We delve into each category and learn about topics such as art history, culture, environmental factors, artists, and medium in relation to the category.  The projects brought home are just a small taste of what we learn about in art class.

Currently, in The Great Hall we are delving into the great artists and designers.  We are looking at every type and style including car design, home design, interior design, fashion design, great painters, architects, glass blowers, builders, and so much more.  My goal is for students to better understand the people and careers that create the world around us...art is everywhere!

Sigsbee Day at Ft. Zachary Taylor

Friday morning I had a chance to join 2 grade levels at Ft. Zach for a fun short art lesson.  The students made drawings from observation.  That means they looked carefully and drew what they saw in front of them.  They all did a super job!  Here are some pics of the area they drew.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have been learning about form.  Form is very different from shape because it is 3 dimensional.  Students learned to name forms such as cone, cylinder, sphere, and pyramid.  They used a cylinder (cardboard roll) to change the form into a bug.  How imaginitive they were!  Look at the lovely wings, fun eyes, and details on the legs.  Nice job Kindergarteners!

More fabulous pyramids!

Ms. Castonguay's class did an amazing job!

Every class has worked so hard to get to the completion of their pyramids.   Nice job everybody!  I'll keep adding more pictures of pyramids till every class is included.  Keep checking back!

It looks like Egypt in here!!

Students have been learning all about ancient Egypt.  After digging deep into 4000 year old artifacts, they each made a fabulous mini pyramid.  They've included a drawing of themselves as a sphinx, their name written in hieroglyphics, a sentence in hieroglyphics, and decorations.  The pyramid building was our culminating activity that ends our unit on Egypt.  Here are some pictures from various grade levels.
